A resting place for travelers crossing the Utsunoya Pass

Okabe-shuku was the 21st post station on the Tokaido Road, located at the western foot of Utsunoya Pass. It was a small post station about the same size as Mariko-shuku, but it was very prosperous and was used by many travelers, officials of the shogunate, and feudal lords. Along the old Tokaido Road, there still remains the building of the Inn Kashibaya from the Edo Period (1603 - 1868). Here you can wander around and enjoy the atmosphere of the post station in its heyday.

After crossing the Utsunoya Pass in the pouring rain, Yaji and Kita finally arrive at Okabe-shuku. There, a tout who stood waiting tells them that ferry service is closed for the Oi River, and the two resign themselves to staying in Okabe-shuku for the night, deciding to rest their bodies until they can cross the river.
