An old post station, boasting a temple associated with the Tokugawa Clan and an old-fashioned atmosphere
Okitsu-shuku was the 17th post station on the Tokaido, a place for travelers from the east take a break after crossing the Satta Pass, and for travelers from the west to prepare to cross the Satta Pass. It was the intersection of the Minobu Road connecting Suruga Province (present-day Shizuoka Prefecture) and Kai Province (present-day Yamanashi Prefecture) and the Tokaido Road, which ran east to west, so it prospered as a strategic point of transportation during the Edo period (1603 - 1868). Seikenji Temple houses many valuable cultural properties, including the room where Tokugawa Ieyasu studied as a child, and materials related to the Korean envoys who traveled on the Tokaido Road.
