This specialty of Yui-shuku has been popular since the Edo period (1603 - 1868), and appears in the comic novel Tokaidochu Hizakurige (Going Tokaido Shank's Mare)by the name "specialty sugar mochi". A woman working at a tea house tries to call in the characters Yaji and Kita, but for some reason they pass her by. Non-glutinous rice is used in keeping with tradition since the Edo period (1603 - 1868), giving it an appearance that led to the name tamago mochi (egg rice cake). Today it can still be purchased at the confection store Haruno Seika, which was founded in 1926.
